How to Search Arizona Booking Records

Finding booking and release records in Arizona depends on where the arrest happened. Local arrests go to county jails. State prison data is separate. Here is how to search each type of record in Arizona.

For county jail records, start with the sheriff office website for that county. Many have online inmate search tools. Type in the person's name to see if they are currently in jail. Current inmates show up with their charges and bond info. If the online search does not work or the county does not have one, call the jail directly. Staff can tell you if someone is in custody and provide basic booking details over the phone.

The Arizona Department of Public Safety maintains criminal history records at the state level. Under ARS § 41-1750, DPS runs the Central State Repository for all Arizona criminal records. However, state law does not allow DPS to do criminal background checks for private citizens or employers. The repository is mainly for law enforcement and licensed agencies. If you need your own record, you can request a record review through the DPS Public Services Portal.

Arizona Public Records Law

Arizona has strong public records laws. ARS § 39-121 states that public records held by any officer shall be open to inspection at all times during office hours. This means anyone can ask to see booking records, arrest reports, and other law enforcement documents. You do not need to give a reason.

Under ARS § 39-121.01, you can request copies of any public record during regular business hours. The agency can charge reasonable fees to cover copying costs. Most sheriff offices charge between $5 and $15 for standard reports. Longer documents may cost more per page.

Arizona statutes on public records access for booking records

If an agency denies your records request, you have options. ARS § 39-121.02 allows you to file a special action in superior court to challenge the denial. The court can order the agency to release the records if the denial was improper. Commercial requests have added rules under ARS § 39-121.03 that require you to state your commercial purpose.

Note: Some booking record details may be redacted to protect victim information or ongoing investigations.
